I wouldn’t see affiliate links as paid links – you have little control over them and people place them on their website out of choice. If taking this view – every banner on every website is also a paid link. Certainly no penalties related to them – you can see this from the rankings of companies that use SEO friendly affiliate links. In fact, it’s just giving Google fewer redirects to worry about.

I personally wouldn’t draw attention to your desire for links – just offer affiliates lots of reasons to keep your links clean e.g. lots of product data, free content, widgets etc.

Affiliate links are considered paid links, right? Shouldn’t they carry a rel=”nofollow”? Google probably recognizes common affiliate links and disregards their effect on SERPs or even penalizes the use thanks to their paid link policy.

Great post as you’d expect Rob, good to see this all pulled together in one post,

If implementing one of these schemes I spose then there lots of nice follow on tactics you can use.

E.g. a prize for every new affiliate who adds a link that month etc, make a big deal of increasing the commision on a new section of the site to kick start it’s link growth etc
